1. Leader’s email list for Pack 405
Leader’s email list for Pack 405. Let me know if you wish to update your email address.
—list sent in email—
2. Pack List
I have requested an electronic copy of our pack list so that we can manipulate the list into formats that are useful for us, such as mail merge
I am waiting for this to arrive.
3. Sub Camp Theme
Our sub camp theme is “Great Barrier Reef” and as such we have a few fishy type craft items on our plate. Some of this will be covered at the Pre-Cuboree camp.
Great_Barrier_Reef [wikipedia]
3.a.) Pack Gateway
* Each pack, as a pack to make a gateway with the theme in mind.
* The gateway to be used as the pack entrance. Often Pack’s use their gateway as an assembly point before moving out to activities.
* Gateways need to be up as soon as possible after cubs having settled in.
We need to design and build a Pack Gateway for Pack 405 This should be at least remotely linked to the theme ![]()
It is probably worthwhile picking a sub-theme that we could also grab some six names from.
Eg. Nemo Pack;
List_of_Finding_Nemo_characters [wikipedia]
Tank Gang six names - Gill, Bloat, Gurgle, Peach, Deb (and Flo), Jaques, Bubbles, Giggles
Eg. Reef Shark Pack (Big Teeth Grrr!)
Reef_sharks [wikipedia]
Six names - Grey reef shark, Blacktip reef shark, Caribbean reef shark, Black tail reef shark, whitetip reef shark.
Best to come up with something a bit unique so we don’t blend to much with the other packs …
3.b.) Fish with names (Fish on a stick)
* Each plaque is individual to the Cub.
* His or her plaque is to be a cutout fish, a coral, sea shell or any Barrier Reef creature. Google for ideas.
* This plaque should be about A4 in size.
* Name of Cub Scout and pack number on that cubs own plaque.
* Plaques can be laminated or coated to help protect them.
* Each pack is to display them along Peppermint Drive on sticks or hung of a string line.
4. TENTS
We will need some extra canvas as both 1st Eltham (John L. is Akela Pack 406) and Diamond creek will supply a Pack and the sub-camp.
Let me know what you have available as I may need to go on a canvas raid *chuckle* I have an emergency stash of Canvas down with my old Group just in case.
We need to have an eating shelter within our Pack area, I’ll need to reconfirm but Peter had verbally given an Ok for a Diamond Ck shelter for this purpose.
Remember we don’t have to sleep in our sixes but we do need to separate our boys and girls sleeping areas.
I will also provide a tent for the Leader’s “down time” tent (kid free zone). I’ll also have some spare time activities and games available from this tent if they are required.
We should also use the same canvas at the pre-Cuboree camp.
Yes - We can have Diamond Creek’s Shelter for our Pack Area, all of Diamond Creeks tables and chairs are being used in the Sub Camp.
Currently Diamond Creek has enough tents to sleep 29 out of our 30 Cubs, -We are struggling with being short for 1 Girl (so would probably need to put 2 of ours into a tent with girls from Research or Plenty, if any of you have room for them). — Brenda, 1st Diamond Creek
5. Transporting sleeping gear and setup
As we have 30 Cubs going from Diamond Creek we will use the Diamond Creek hall as our staging area for collecting the gear on Friday 28th March 5:30pm - 7:00pm. We’ll need to have a chat to work out transport, trailers, tow vehicles, semi-trailers,…
We can transport stretchers (+ sleeping bags?) but not the personal gear which will go on the bus [correct me if I'm wrong here]
I was wrong:
I suggest that Personal Gear also comes up on the set-up day. For the last
3 Cuboree’s Diamond Creek has done this and it takes a lot of the stress out of Monday as we don’t have to spend time looking for Bags etc. But it is easier to bring most of the personal gear home on the bus, so that Tents can air overnight after Cuboree before being taken down. — Brenda, 1st Diamond Creek
On the Saturday we will make our way to Gillwell and down to the sub camp to setup the tents. Our SubCamp is down near the abseiling tower; I am still after a map of this years layout and will make it available as soon as I can.
>>> Please arrange within your packs for a team of parents, Scouts,
>>> Venturers, Rovers to assist with the setup, and a separate team for
>>> the pull down so that Leaders are not knackered before we get
>>> started
>>> Allow 1/2 day for setup Sat 29th March
>>> Allow 1/2 day for pull down Sat 5th April
6. Buses
I have photos of the lists that were displayed at the orientation, I don’t think these will be the way that things will be on the day but they should give an indication.
I currently do not know where the pickup point is.
There are a number of things you will need to bring with you on the bus on the way to CUBOREE; Cuboree 2008 Travelling Kit (pdf)
7. Shirts, hats, scarves
I have already visited Diamond Ck as they had a Cuboree night last night, I will need to tee up a night to visit Research and Plenty to distribute their swag. At this stage it would be good to arrange the visit for next week if it fits into your programs.
Give me a yell to work out times.
8. Meet up
We should arrange another get together after the pre-cuboree camp to get items such as the gateway finalized.
We will also need to look at Pack roles such as Pack Welfare, Pack Quatermaster, Pack First Aider, Pack Chocolate Biscuit eater.
(see page 17 in the Cuboree Handbook)
Suggestion welcome
9.”Who is this mad man that is our Pack Akela?”
For those that haven’t had a lot to do with me I think the description used by one of our Gellibrand Leader’s “(…) this is Akela, he’s a mega-geek (…)” is a fair introduction
I have been with 1st Eltham Gellibrand Pack for about 8 years, before this I was down on the beach with 1st Chelsea Heights Cub Pack and have been a Cub Leader for coming up to 21 years.
Rather than go into what I do in the pack our Pack program and a snapshot of what we get up to can be browsed at gellibranded.wordpress.com and I tend to post ad-hoc thoughts about Scouting/Cubs/Cuboree… to rikkiresources.wordpress.com.
As you can probably guess from the email address I work at the University of Melbourne.
10. There is no 10
Time to finish before I run the inter-webs out of black ink,
Cheers Darren ![]()
